The Concept of the Village in Swedish Archaeology

Abstract

In this paper the Swedish concept of "by" (village) will be treated. Iron Age settlements will he treated from a historical pcrspcctive, the starting point for the discussion being archaeological and historical sources Irom Öland. The notion that single farms were the sole form of settlement during the said period will be seriously called into question.
