The article is a presentation of a study on ceramics from the Middle Neolithic period, or more specifically, decorations occurring on ceramics from Western Sweden within the Pitted Ware Culture. The main purpose of the study was to compare the decorations on the Swedish ceramics with the corresponding ceramics from a pit containing an abundance of finds at the site Kainsbakke on Djursland, eastern Jutland. In the first publication of Kainsbakke in the eighties, the decorations were seen to have similarities with sites in the Jonstorp area in north-western Scania. Looking at the geography, this was also reasonable. The aim of this work is to examine these resemblances more closely. The work is included in the research project “Contact; The Pitted Ware Phenomenon in Djursland and Maritime Relations Across the Kattegat”. For the sub-project in question, thousands of ceramic sherds from different sites along the Swedish West coast have been documented in photographs. It has thereby been possible to identify which sites and areas that were most connected to Kainsbakke in terms of similarities in the decoration on ceramic vessels. In addition, a comparison was made amongst the Swedish sites, which led to interesting results regarding regional differences and identification of different local groups.
