About the Journal

ASLA Studies in Applied Linguistics publishes peer-reviewed research articles in the field of applied linguistics. Applied linguistics is an inter- and transdisciplinary research field explicitly oriented toward practical issues related to language and communication. Since 1988, the journal has published contributions from ASLA’s symposia. Since 2022, it has had a regular article publication schedule as well as the English title ASLA Studies in Applied Linguistics. Manuscripts can be submitted continuously throughout the year. Accepted articles are published online and later compiled into a volume. Typically, one volume is published annually, and every other year, a volume featuring contributions from ASLA’s symposium is released.

Aims and Scope

The aim of ASLA Studies in Applied Linguistics is to offer researchers a broad forum for disseminating research on applied linguistics in a Swedish and Nordic context. The journal welcomes both empirical and theoretical research articles addressing practical issues related to language and communication.

Its thematic scope ranges from aspects of individual linguistic and communicative competence (such as first and second language acquisition, literacy, language disorders, etc.) to language- and communication-related issues within and between societies, such as linguistic variation and discrimination, multilingualism, language conflicts, language policy and language planning.

Target Audience

The primary target groups include researchers in applied linguistics in Sweden and other countries, language teachers, speech therapists, language consultants in business and the public sector, and other professionals dealing with language-related matters.

Article Formats

ASLA Studies in Applied Linguistics welcomes research article manuscripts (maximum 8,000 words, excluding abstract, references, and appendices) in Swedish, English, Danish and Norwegian. The editorial board does not provide language editing services. Manuscripts that do not meet an adequate standard of language will be returned to the author for revision.

Peer Review Process

  1. Submitted manuscripts undergo an initial editorial review. ASLA’s editorial board assesses whether the manuscript aligns with the journal’s aims and objectives and meets high scientific standards. If the manuscript fails to meet these criteria, it may be rejected.
  2. Manuscripts deemed suitable for further review are sent to at least two external expert reviewers. The journal follows a double-blind review process, ensuring that both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the process.
  3. Reviewers write a report evaluating the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses and provide the editorial board with a recommendation regarding its acceptance or rejection.
  4. Based on the reviewers’ reports, the editorial board decides whether the manuscript should (1) be accepted for publication, (2) be revised (with minor or major changes) and resubmitted, or (3) be rejected.
