Pollen analysis was used to clarify the history of land-use in Gamla Uppsala. Changing edaphic and topographic conditions due to land upheaval processes are estimated. Corings have been made in former lake sediment in areas that are dry ground today. Carbon-14 age determinations show that detailed know-ledge of geologicalprocesses is crucial in evaluating pollen records. A preliminary land-use history for the area is given, from the Pre-Roman Iron Age up to the Early Viking Age.
