This paper presents a method for the swift and approxaimte characterisation of ancient organic materials. It is an application of Fourier Infrared Spectrometry and fingerprinting comparisons of pectra by correlation coefficients, evaluated through hierarchical cluster analysis. The paper hows that it i possible to make general categorisations using the method, and that the application of statistical methods facilitates the interpretation of old and ancient samples.
