Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the clasping device on brooches <luring Scandinavian Iron Age. It consists of a schedule of development and a cultural analysis of one of the changes. This step of development was a change of construction meta!, fromcopper-alloys to iron, which took place around 400 AD. To test if the change implied an improvement, experimental load tests were made on
reconstucted devices. A pervading intention is to point at the fruitfullness of the combination of cultural analysis, source material analysis and experimental laboratory analysis.
