Abstract

At least 16 bronze shields, dated to Late Bronze Age, were discovered in Kallandso near lake Vii.nern, Sweden in the year of 1985. Plant material was found densely packed close to the shields and concentrically oriented. Analysis of the material was performed to identify the plants and to find out if they possibly could have formed a packing material. The thick layer of plants showed to consist mostly of roots of reed, Phragmites australis and was interpreted as a natural formation. Macrofossil- and pollenanalyses were also performed to get some information of the environment at the time of the deposit in the creek of Viinern. The creek is nowadays arable land.
