During the autumn of 1989 the Archaeological Research Laboratory at University of Stockholm received an advanced equipment for documentation and analysis of surface structures. The equipment was obtained by a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and has just been taken into use. This paper describes the theoretical background for using this equipment and some of the pilot tests performed earlier. To explain the method, a report is given of an attempt to find textile impressions on a corroded bronze sword, and an extraction of impressed ornamentation on a bronze plate, damaged by fire. A surface documentation made with the new equipment will also be demonstrated
