Abstract

In this paper the organic remains on ceramics from Tybrind Vig, Denmark; an Ertebölle settlement, are examied. The cermaics were found at an settlement now situated below the water level.

Our aim was to determin the protein-content, aminoacid-frequency and give an opinion on from what food the remains originated.

The occurrence of herring bones and scales in the surface had however lead to the interpretation that the remains were from a fish soup. According to our results, the low-protein-content, the fat-content and the presence of fytholiths, put together with the differentiation in layers of the organic material, points to the fact that the origin is a fermented porridge of vegetable origin and that the fish remains do not directly belong to the crust.
