Preliminary observations on the manufacture of relief backplates in Hiberno-Saxon filigree work.

Different techniques used to produce the relief effect on filigree backplate foils are discussed. More examination of these foils to identify the type of die is urged, as typical foil profiles can be tied in with different dies. No related dies survive; motif-pieces might be an alternative.
