Petruspredikan, Kerygma Petri, tidigkristen litteratur, textkritik, översättningAbstract
The article critically responds to John Christian Eurell’s 2022 Swedish translation of the ten fragments of the early second-century Preaching of Peter (Kerygma Petri). Several shortcomings are identified. First of all, it is pointed out that the presentation of the fragments in the original Greek does not consistently conform to the critical edition allegedly used, neglects text-critical issues, and is marred by frequent typographical errors. Secondly, the absence of any explicit discussion of translational principles, which raises questions about the ways in which Greek syntax and vocabulary as well as scriptural quotations are rendered in the translation, is highlighted. Thirdly, questionable and erroneous translations choices in each of the ten fragments are pointed out. Fourthly and finally, the article identifies three theological components in the fragments as translated by Eurell that do not have any basis in the Greek text, as well as three theological components that are indeed present in the Greek text but do not come through in the translation. The article concludes on the note that, whereas the initiative to make the Preaching of Peter available in Swedish is praiseworthy, the challenge to present a consistent and correct translation of the fragments remains.
