Mediernas gestaltning av rättspsykiatrisk vård i Sverige

The aim of this text is to highlight how forensic psychiatric care is portrayed in Swedish media, exemplified through a study of all articles mentioning Swedish forensic psychiatry over a five-year period. The material, which includes 87 written articles, has been analyzed using qualitative content analysis. An inductive approach was applied to develop codes, categories, and broader themes. The overarching themes identified in the material are consistently negative: they address the failure of the justice system, the failure of forensic psychiatric care, and the danger posed by future patients Media reporting is likely the primary source of knowledge about forensic psychiatric care for many individuals, which may influence both the outcomes of such care and the ability of forensic psychiatric patients to reintegrate into society after treatment. The predominantly negative media coverage risks contributing to fear and negative attitudes toward both forensic psychiatric care and its patients.
