Abstract

- Children and youth with behavioural problems who are assessed by the social services are a variegated group in terms of gender, age and problems. However, while knowledge on such variations is important for tailoring relevant interventions, it is still scarce. Hence, the aim of this exploratory study has been to investigate subgroups among children whom, after being assessed, is deemed to show behavioural problems. Further, differences between girls and boys have also been investigated. The study is based on a survey to case workers in eight municipalities in the Stockholm region where the social services have initiated an assessment. To identify subgroups, a cluster analysis has been carried out based on information about behavioural problems related to the child (N= 904). The analysis identified four different subgroups that differed distinctly from each other, self-harm and/or eating disorders, school problems, multiple problems and other problems. The results show a number of gender differences, both within the subgroups and between them. For all subgroups, problems linked to the parents were also identified, although to varying extent. One conclusion that can be drawn from the results is that the variation in behavioural problems among young people assessed by the social services is extensive. This underlines the social services’ vast and challenging task of finding and matching relevant interventions for children with behavioural problems
