Author Guidelines

General Information

ASLA:s skriftserie / ASLA Studies in Applied Linguistics welcomes research article manuscript submissions. Manuscripts can be submitted continuously throughout the year. Submitted manuscripts may undergo a plagiarism check. Accepted articles are published online on a rolling basis and are compiled annually into a volume. The journal does not charge any publication fees.

Scope

Research article manuscripts may be a maximum of 8,000 words, excluding the abstract, references, and any appendices. Manuscripts exceeding this word limit will be returned to the author.

Review Process

Manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review. This means that the author’s/authors’ names and biographies should not be included in the manuscript itself but must be submitted as a separate file (see below). Additionally, remove any personal information from the file’s properties.

Selection Criteria

Reviewers will assess whether a manuscript should be accepted, revised (with minor or major modifications), or rejected based on the following criteria:

  • The contribution falls within the field of applied linguistics.
  • The contribution presents empirical research or coherent theoretical discussions and reflections explicitly oriented toward a practical issue related to language and communication.
  • The contribution includes a critical discussion and makes an important and innovative contribution to applied linguistics.
  • The contribution has not previously been published and is not under review for publication in another journal.
  • The research has been conducted in accordance with established ethical standards, which must be clearly evident in the submission.
  • The contribution maintains a high scientific quality.
  • The contribution is well written in terms of language and style.

Author Biography

A short biography (maximum 50 words per author) should be submitted as a separate file. Please use ASLA’s author template

Language and Proofreading

Manuscripts can be written in Swedish, English, Norwegian or Danish. Authors are responsible for the linguistic quality of their text and for proofreading the manuscript. A final proofreading opportunity will be offered at the end of the editorial process.

Formatting

  • Manuscripts should be submitted as a Word file. Format the manuscript according to ASLA’s style guide.
  • Follow APA 7 for in-text citations and reference lists. Always include a DOI if available.

For submissions in Swedish, please use:

    • “Red.” instead of “Ed.” and “Eds.”
    • “s.” instead of “p.” and “pp.”
    • “I” instead of “In” (for book chapters/anthologies)

  • Follow APA 7 for formatting tables and figures:
    • Tables: Use the table tool. Each table must be referenced in the text.
    • Figures: Use an appropriate figure tool. Figures must be high-resolution and referenced in the text.
  • Use endnotes rather than footnotes. Endnotes should be used sparingly.
  • Do not hyphenate or paginate manually.
  • All body text should be in regular font style.
  • Use italics for short linguistic examples in the text.
  • Words and expressions that require emphasis should also be in italics.
  • To indicate a new paragraph, use a blank line (press Enter twice) instead of an indent.
  • Short quotations (maximum three lines) should be placed within double quotation marks within the text. Longer quotations should be formatted as block quotes according to ASLA’s style guide.
