Gunnel Melchers is Professor Emerita at the Department of English, Stockholm University. Her main field of research is dialectology and sociolinguistics, with particular reference to Yorkshire and the Shetland Isles. She is co-author of World Englishes (Hodder Arnold, 2003) and one of the contributors to Mouton's recent Handbook of Varieties of English. In 2004 she co-edited NJES 2:3, a special issue devoted to the influence of English on the languages in the Nordic countries.
