Abstract

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalitis (CFS/ME) is a complex multi-system disease of probable diverse etiology and pathogenesis resulting in significant functional impairment.  Significantly, the fatigue is generally worsened by physical or mental exertion.  Common symptoms include cognitive dysfunction, autonomic manifestations of dysfunction, sleep abnormalities, pain, and GI complaints.  Worldwide studies have indicated that when appropriately screened and diagnosed, the incidence rates are similar in the developed countries where it has been studied.  A conservative estimate suggests that 2.5 million Americans suffer from CFS/ME and further, that a significant proportion (>25%) are severely affected or disabled.
