Kultur, tidsepok och socialt sammanhang påverkar hur psykisk sjukdom uttrycks, förstås och vårdsökande. I denna artikel vill jag belysa värdet av att använda den etnografiskt baserade kulturformuleringen, som finns i det diagnostiska systemet DSM-IV, som hjälp för att på ett individualiserat sätt förstå betydelsen av kultur och sammanhang vid psykiatrisk diagnostik. Vidare kommer psykiatrins roll som bidrag till att bygga ett tolerant multikulturellt samhälle att belysas. 

Abstract

Culture, historical epoch and social context influence the expression and understanding of mental disorder as well as help-seeking behavior. In this article I want to illustrate the value of using the ethnographically based cultural formulation within the diagnostic system DSM-IV as a tool to increase understanding on the individual level of the importance of culture and context in psychiatric diagnostics. Furthermore, the role of psychiatry in contributing to the construction of a tolerant, multicultural society will be discussed.
