Abstract

I den här artikeln analyseras hur samhället beskrivs i svenska populärmedicinska texter om övervikt och fetma. Syftet är att placera de här beskrivningarna i ett historiskt och kulturellt sammanhang för att visa hur medicinska texter influeras av kulturella föreställningar och underliggande tankefigurer. Tydligt är att synen på samhället präglas av idén om en distinktion mellan ett förmodernt förr och ett hypermodernt nu, och att dessa båda positioner laddas med positiva respektive negativa betydelser som antas inverka på möjligheten att motverka övervikt och fetma.

This article analyses the way society is described in popular medical texts on overweight and obesity. By placing these descriptions in a historical and cultural context, the aim is to show how medical texts are influenced by cultural conceptions. It is apparent that the texts are characterized by the idea of a distinction between a pre-modern past and a hyper-modern present, and that these positions are charged with positive and negative meanings, of importance to the possibility to prevent overweight and obesity.
