  • A new issue is out about teacher- student experiences, mental health issues, and institutional regimes.

    We are delighted to announce that we just published our new issue, JPHE Vol. 7 No, 2, 2025.

    This issue offers a broad variety of perspectives on praxis in higher education. In the opening paper “Expanding Opportunity Spaces: Students as Co-Creators of Learning Environments”, Holen, Wallin and Gjøtterud discuss student engagemang in learning activities. The second paper by Cox, concerns “Vulnerability and Voice: Mental Health as a Site of Praxis”, and in the third paper by Nestlog, Uddling and Thyberg “Literacy as Praxis: Negotiating Discourses in Teacher Education” they highlight the domain of teacher education. In the fourth paper, “Transparency and Equity: Praxis in the Public Face of Admissions”, by Fryer, Jones and Zhang they examine the transparency in UK undergraduate admissions.

    Finally, in our Notes from the field, about "Conscious Reflection: Contemplative Practice and Transformative Phenomenology", Strohmayr and Jones explore how so called contemplative practice can scaffold graduate students’ development of praxis.

  • New Conversation: Bridging Higher Education Research to the Reality of Modern Learners

    In February 2025, Z.W. Taylor interviewed Allyson Cornett, Director of Research at Trellis Strategies, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing higher education and strengthening the workforce in the United States. They discussed Trellis Strategies' focus on financial wellness and its impact on student success. Cornett, who joined Trellis in 2017 and has a background in applied anthropology, shared insights from her experience leading mixed-methods research projects across institutions nationwide. The conversation explored how Trellis Strategies helps colleges and universities understand and address the challenges faced by "modern learners" - today's diverse student population who often have different priorities, backgrounds, and educational journeys compared to traditional students. Despite institutional resource constraints and leadership turnover in higher education, Cornett emphasized the importance of qualitative research to capture students' lived experiences beyond mere statistics. This discussion highlights the crucial intersection of financial wellness, student success metrics, and the ethical considerations of research that genuinely benefits the students it studies.

  • New Conversation: Professional Development for AI in Education

    In December 2024, Z.W. Taylor interviewed Andria Layton, a high school English teacher from South Mississippi. They discussed Andria's innovative approach to introducing artificial intelligence (AI) to educators through a professional development program. Layton, who has witnessed the rapid evolution of technology in education, shared her insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. Despite working in a district with limited resources, she has been pushing for AI integration not only to support student learning but also to enhance teacher self-efficacy and administrative efficiency. This conversation explores the barriers to AI adoption in education, the ethical considerations, and the potential for AI to reshape the future of teaching and learning.

  • JPHE's 5 year 'anniversary issue’ has just been published!

    The first paper in this anniversary issue is written by Angervall and Heikkinen and is based on an interview with Professor Hannu Heikkinen from Jyväskylä University in Finland. The paper is titled: ‘Nothing can grow forever’, Working with planetary praxis in higher education. It explores aspects of praxis, and the concept of planetary praxis and its purpose for what Heikkinen calls a ‘life worth living’.
