Abstract

Individual parenting interviews with the father or non-birthing parent is a new routine at the Child Health Center in Sweden. In the research project Fathers and children in child health care these interviews are studied and in this article, we focus on the child’s participation. With the help of conversation analysis, we analyze video-recorded nurse-child-parent interactions with the purpose of showing how the pre-verbal child has an active role as participant as they themself initiate social interactions with the adults or as adults talk to each other as they speak “to and through” the child. Focusing on recurring interactional phenomenon, the study may serve as a starting point for a discussion on how the child’s presence shapes the individual parental interview both regarding its form and content.
