Implementing the overall public health policy goal involves a complex implementation process. This article provides a brief introduction to important aspects in the field of implementation. The theoretical framework Quality Implementation Framework (QIF), which focuses on concrete activities to achieve implementation of good quality, is presented. The origins of nine health-promoting interventions aimed at children and young people were examined about twenty years ago. The following aspects then emerged as contributing to implementation: local needs, financially stressed situation, external funding, policy documents and the presence of a local public health sector. Today, three of the nine interventions remain. Why have these three interventions survived, but not the other six? Is there an implementation aspect here? The need for implementation support is often raised in the public health area. Implementation research should therefore receive continued funding, while authorities should contribute knowledge and concrete support to implementation in practical public health work at regional and local level.
