This text discusses a Swedish internal medicine department that has embraced narrative medicine to enhance its ward rounds. The rounds were moved to a dedicated room where the patient’s story is attentively received by the healthcare team, including senior consultants, junior doctors, nurses, and assistant nurses. This narrative is integrated with the staff’s expertise to develop a comprehensive care plan. The approach has transformed communication patterns and relationships within the clinic, making the patient more involved in their care. Over time, the team perspective became established, fostering mutual dependencies and behaviors essential for effective clinical practice. The text draws on Ralph Stacey’s “complex responsive processes” theory and is based on studies and reports by Bååthe et al. (2014, 2016a, 2016b) and a book chapter by Bååthe (2018).
