The medical specialty of social medicine and public health faces various challenges, from a lack of training places and specialist positions to existential questions about its survival and purpose within the Swedish healthcare system and society. This article has its starting point in highlighting the perspective of a few future specialists on the specialty, whose backgrounds reflect the diversity of the specialty today. Since the specialty is small, the interests, motivations and visions of prospective specialists play a large role in the specialty's future directions.
