In the late 1970s, it was reported that Västerbotten had the highest heart attack mortality rate among men in the country. In response, the Västerbotten Health Survey was created, incorporating both individual- and population-based measures, and was gradually introduced across the county’s municipalities from 1985 to 1991. Over 40 years, 130,000 middle-aged individuals have participated, and more than 200,000 examinations have been conducted. The article describes the development from pilot project to full-scale program, as well as overall mortality and cardiovascular mortality compared during 1990 to 2006 with the Swedish population in the same age groups.
