Abstract

This article investigates workplace violence and school professional’s work environment in Swedish schools. The last decade the number of reported incidents of threats and violence in school have increased, yet incidents of serious violence is quite uncommon. Serious violence occurs most frequently in lower secondary school, but the most serious incidents have been reported in upper secondary school. The article also highlights that schools’ work environment is under-prioritized by school managements. Given that schools are a female dominated workplace this absence could be understood as lacking gender equity. Many teachers consider leaving the teacher profession due to the fear of being exposed to violence. Given the school’s future and democratic role this is an utterly problematic development. Supporting school personnel and an organization allowing open discussions is therefore vital.
