Abstract

Stone Age archaeology is the essence of prehistoric archaeology, as there is no written or ethnographic evidence to rely upon – only material remains and what we make of them. This is the reason why the empirical data inherent in the archaeological theoretical debate, during the 1960s and onwards, has mainly derived from the Stone Age. We predict that this central position in the theoretical debate will persist for the next 50 years. We have, however, taken the license to draw up a number of dream – or nightmare – scenarios. We argue that the meeting between two human beings is a unique event, not possible to completely simulate from material remains. However, we can still work towards a prehistory populated by real human beings, of interest
to more than a few specialised researchers.
