Pensar desde la periferia. Rasgos del ensayo en Hugo Achugar

The purpose of this article is to comment on the close relationship between the practice of the essay and the idea of ‘thinking from the periphery’ in Hugo Achugar. Although one might think that the Uruguayan author’s writings only prolong familiar aspects of the Latin American essayistic tradition, this article insists that this tradition is revitalized in Achugar's works. To show this, Achugar’s conception of the essay is confronted with that of other contemporary authors. The article proposes that Achugar’s ideas on issues such as cultural otherness, the role of ‘peripheral’ nations and societies in the process of generation and dissemination of knowledge, and the significance of “theoretical babbling”, are coherently articulated with his conception of the essay as the vehicle par excellence of Latin American critical thinking.
