Titânia, a “hermetic story” written by Mário Cesariny in 1953, includes the description of an impressive end of the world. This article aims to test the double advantage of using John’s Book of Revelation to read Cesariny’s book. On the one hand, Titânia’s end of the world glosses and parodies apocalyptic destruction, echoing the imagery of Christian eschatology; on the other hand, both narratives require a game of concealment and unveiling, hermeticism and revelation. Between repetition and difference, we seek to read the two texts together: source and commentary, orthodox religious doctrine and free surrealist drift? This approach also shows how Cesariny’s description of the end of the world allows for a political stance, in praise of marginalized characters.
