When individuals exposed to domestic violence leave their perpetrators, do-mestic violence shelters can offer refuge. However, these shelters have vary-ing capacities to meet exposed adults’ and children’s needs for protection and support. In this article, we describe various challenges that domestic violence shelters are facing today and discuss the importance of non-profit organiza-tions based on Nancy Fraser’s theories of social justice and social protection. The article shows that the knowledge within the non-profit organizations is of importance regardless of whether shelters are run by non-profit organizations, municipalities, or private companies. Moreover, funding needs to be secured to ensure that all shelters have the preconditions to meet the needs of victims.
