Detransition is a relatively new term for regretting or interrupting a medical and often social transition. Terms like “transition regret” have previously been used. This is the first study specifically on detransition in a Swedish context. I interviewed eight detransitioners, seven female and one male, aged 25 to 45 years. The interviews covered their transition and detransition experiences widely, as the main aim was to generate basic knowledge of the phenomenon. This article discusses reasons for detransition against the background of previous research. I argue that detransition is often a complex process where different factors such as health concerns, other circumstances and changing ways of thinking interact. A recurrent theme is a changed understanding of sex, gender and identity in which the previous trans identity does not seem understandable or meaningful.
