During the last years the financial situation for families with children in Sweden has become more difficult. Households with a low-income single parent, and single mothers in particular, are a particular marginalized group. The current article investigates issues on childhood, food poverty and the role of free school lunches for children’s health and education in Sweden historically and today. Since the implementation in 1946 the free school lunches, have had an important supplementary role for children growing up in households with lack of sufficient financial recourses. Today it seems that the need of free school lunches among this group of children have increased. The present article argues that knowledge about our educational history is a vital part of understanding the Swedish democratic tradition.
