Abstract

This special issue of Språk och stil focuses on language use in a range of professional settings. The central interest lies in how textual and interactional practices are shaped by various conditions and constraints, here referred to as frames. In this introduction, we outline the theoretical background regarding how the concept of frame has previously been applied within linguistics and provide an overview of Nordic studies in which frames have been made relevant in analyses of text and interaction in workplace communication. We also introduce a model illustrating how different types of frames relate to one another within professional practice, drawing on Thomas Ricento and Nancy Hornberger’s (1996) theoretical framework. Finally, the six contributions to this special issue are presented and discussed, and we identify potential directions for further research.
