About the Journal

In Situ Archaeologica is a peer-reviewed scholarly archaeological journal publishing articles and discussions in Scandinavian languages and in English*.

Subjects relevant to In Situ Archaeologica range from Stone Age to contemporary archeology, and theoretical, methodological, and empirical studies are published in the journal. The journal also publishes thematic issues containing several articles, which can include results and analyses from contract archeological projects or seminars, workshops, conferences, etc. In Situ Archaeologica does not review literature or publish debates, but the journal does organize discussion sections. These are self-initiated, the result of external proposals to the editorial staff or based on specific suggested articles sent to the journal.

* English language revision is provided by the journal but is generally paid for, as least in part, by the author.

The review process

All submitted manuscripts are first assessed by an editor who decides whether the manuscript is suitable to be sent for peer review. The editor may ask for revisions or changes before manuscripts deemed suitable for further review are sent to double-blinded peer review based on following criteria:

  • The originality of its contribution and relevance to the journal’s topics of interest
  • The soundness of its theory and methodology given the topic
  • The coherence of its analysis
  • Its ability to communicate to readers (grammar and style)
  • The relevance of illustrations and tables

After peer review and editing according to the review, the manuscript is subject to language revisions and harmonization with the journal’s style guide.

Contributions are assessed and published continuously during the year and collected in annual volumes. Normal turnaround time for evaluation of manuscripts is one to two months from date of receipt.

The overall publishing responsibility rests with the journal's editor-in-chief. The editor-in-chief has a qualified editorial board for support.

In cases where a manuscript’s author is in some way associated with the editorial team, they will be removed from all editorial tasks for that article. The author's affiliation with the journal will also be indicated in the final publication of the article.

Publication frequency

Articles are posted online in the annual volume immediately following final proofreading. When posted online, articles are assigned a DOI number (Digital Object Identifier) whereby it becomes possible to search and cite them without delay.

Publication fees

There are no fees for publishing in the journal. English language proofreading is provided by the journal but partially or fully paid for by the author.
