Stone settings can be difficult to understand if they are only seen as graves. For example, it is common that stone settings lack cremated bones. In this article, an attempt has been made to look at the larger landscape through GIS studies. As a complement, a landscape history has been sketched out. The stone settings in the analysis have been part of a larger social context, where they have probably expressed the use of resources. The long period of use shows the importance and depth of the knowledge of the landscape. The author believes that GIS analysis is a good way to go to achieve a greater understanding of the stone setting as a category. The author also argues that it is important not to limit the interpretation of the stone setting to only (or always) being a grave; the stone setting has most likely represented more than that.
