Traducción audiovisual y tratamiento: usted en los subtítulos en sueco

Address may be one of the most challenging aspects of translation, particularly when working from a language like Spanish, with a binary contrast, into a language like Swedish, with cero morphological contrast. An additional complexity is that Swedish, despite this, does count with a system where a binary contrast can be activated.
In this article, we study the translation to Swedish of the V-form: usted in subtitling. The main corpus consists of fiction films and as secondary or comparative corpus, we analise as well documentaries. In the films, there is a clear tendency towards translating usted into the general Swedish form of address, i.e., the T-form, whereas in the documentaries, usted is mostly maintained by means of the less frequently used Swedish V-form: ni. Although the final texts are often adapted to the target language, this confirms that translators indeed resort to and exploit the Swedish V-form.
