About the Journal

Puls – journal for ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology is an online open access journal published by Svenskt visarkiv/Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research, Stockholm, Sweden.

Puls is an annual journal published on Publicera and the website of The National Collections of Music, Theatre and Dance, a state agency of which Svenskt visarkiv is a part.

AIMS AND SCOPE

Puls focuses on discussion of the expressions, roles and functions of music and dance in society, from a scholarly perspective. The main focus of the journal is ethnomusicology and ethnochoreology, but it also embraces adjacent disciplines, such as other aspects of musicology and choreology, folklore, literature, and related studies of traditional and popular culture.

An online journal provides the possibility to publish audio- and audiovisual illustrations, which is very beneficial for studies of music and dance.

READERSHIP

Puls is a modern, scholarly journal aiming to reach scholars and students as well as performers in the fields of music and dancing, and the culturally interested public.

HISTORY

The first volume of Puls was published in 2016, and the journal has since been published annually. The journal could be regarded as an updated sequel – in a communicative as well as scholarly sense – of the former publications from Svenskt visarkiv, the yearbook Sumlen (1976–1999) and the popular journal Noterat (1995–2014).

ARTICLE TYPES

A major part of the journal consists of scholarly double-blind peer reviewed articles. Each issue of Puls also presents articles, book reviews and conference reports in the field of music and dance research, in an extensive review section where current scientific publications are reviewed by experts. Several reports from conferences and network meetings are also presented in each issue. Puls publishes articles in the Scandinavian languages and in English.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Volumes with specific themes are interspersed with open issues, but the thematic issues also allow open article topics. The primary selection criterion for articles is scientific quality. Original and new texts are favored.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS

The editorial work is conducted by a general editor and a co-editor (the latter appointed for a two-year period) in co-operation with the Editorial Board of Puls. A scholarly and cross-disciplinary Advisory Board is liaised with the journal.

All articles are subject to a double-blind peer review process by two anonymous and independent experts, prior to publication. Read more about the journal's peer review process.
