The purpose of the study was to explore students’ experiences of regular classroom discussions on existential themes, and to investigate how such dialogues affect their interpersonal relationships. The study was conducted in two phases: in 2020 and in 2021–2022 at a non- confessional school among children in grade 5. The results from the 29 semi-structural interviews and the oral evaluation with the teacher highlight how the students experienced the teaching and the school situation in different ways but also the importance of regular discussions about existential themes for a deeper understanding, and for developing a trustful climate among children. The results also reflect the central role that adults have in children’s opportunities to understand different opinions. Implementing existential discussions with support from teachers in school might serve as one of the tools to prevent conflicts between students.
