In my article I describe how to use quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) to investigate problems related to work life. Three different work-related challenges (risk exposures) are presented, which are unemployment, unemployment anxiety and high workload (among in-home care workers). A survey with 967 participants (39% response rate) was used for the first two problems while a survey with 1154 in-home care workers (58% response rate) was used for the workload problem. Unemployment with a deteriorated QALY of 9.6% was the risk exposure that had the greatest impact on QALY while job insecurity deteriorated QALY by 6.2% and high workload by 3.5% compared to no exposure. My results show that QALY is a useful measure to study how health is affected by social problems including work-related challenges.
