I juni 2025 presenterade International Council of Nurses (ICN) en ny, uppdaterad definition av både nurse och nursing. Behovet av att definiera professionen är i sig inget nytt. Redan Florence Nightingale ställde frågan ”What is Nursing and what it is not” i mitten av 1800-talet (Nightingale, 1859/2010). Sedan dess har ICN, sedan början av 1900-talet, arbetat för att skapa en globalt giltig beskrivning av sjuksköterskan och omvårdnaden (Williamson, 2023).
