About the Journal

Aim and scope

Idrott, historia & samhälle (Sport, History & Society) is a forum for sport history research. Primarily, it is a platform for sport historians in Sweden and the other Nordic countries. However, the journal also publishes contributions from the rest of the world. In addition, it constitutes an important and prolific meeting place between academic historic research and public history, within the field of sport history.

Type of material

The journal welcomes contributions on sport history in the broad sense in relation to competition, physical culture, health, outdoor life, media, pedagogy, association life, politics and society within humanities and social science. Since 2012, the journal has published peer-reviewed articles. The journal also publishes articles outside the peer review system, as well as debates, reviews and conference reports. The texts must be original works and not previously published in the final versions sent to the journal. Texts must also not be under review for publication in other journals.

Language and readership

Idrott, historia & samhälle publishes texts on Swedish, Nordic and international sports history in Scandinavian languages and English. It addresses researchers as well as a wider readership and strives to publish well-written texts of high scholarly quality.

Peer review

All submitted manuscripts are first assessed by an editor who determines if the manuscript is suitable for peer review.

Manuscripts deemed suitable for further review are sent to two or more experts who are tasked with highlighting the manuscript's general and specific merits and shortcomings.

The journal uses a double-blind review process before acceptance/rejection of manuscripts, meaning that authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the review process.

The review process is estimated to take about 6 weeks but may vary.

Based on the reviews, the editor then compiles a recommendation to a) approve the manuscript for publication, b) request revisions from the author, or c) reject the manuscript.

The overall editorial responsibility rests with the journal's editor-in-chief, who is supported by a qualified editorial board in various matters concerning the publication of individual manuscripts, the journal's development, and more.

In cases where a manuscript author is associated with the journal, they will be disassociated from any tasks related to the specific manuscript. An independent editor will be tasked with organizing the review process. The author's affiliation with the journal will be disclosed in the article upon publication.

The journal accepts manuscripts that have previously been uploaded for review as preliminary versions, on personal websites, presented at conferences, or made available through other informal communication channels. However, authors must hold the copyright for the text in question. Authors are also encouraged to provide links to previous versions of the article, where available, in the final version of the article published in the journal.

Publication frequency

The journal is published once a year.
