Abstract

Hearing Problems in a School of Music – an Inventory of Issues.
During the recent years hearing problems have come into focus at the Shool of Music and Musicology, Göteborg University. One of the main reasons for study drop off is hearing injuries and particularly tinnitus and hyper sensitivity.Together with audiologists we have tried to survey some issues. The frequence of perceived problems are between 10 and 15 percent. It is found that a musician have more problems with subjective symptoms due to the fact that their hearing is trained as a professional tool. Nevertheless, information about risks are seldom accepted by the students. Not even the fact that hearing injuries are common among professionals can popularise protective behaviour. However, an open clinic for individual consultation has been a most fruitful measure for raising the student’s awareness. Specially designed hearing protective plugs for musicians are openly accepted in every day practice. A programme for ”musicians hearing knowledge” is to be developed as a study interdisciplinary subject, including medical, technical and behavioural audiology, acoustics and esthetics.
