Abstract

The Estonian composer Eduard Tubin’s opera Barbara von Tisenhusen (1968) presents dynamics of power and repression based on true historical events in sixteenth-century Estonia. Through a series of symbolic narrative dichotomies – the primary ones being notions of nobility vs. peasantry and male domination vs. female oppression – this article focuses on a socio-cultural and dramaturgical analysis of the opera’s allegorical meaning through an investigation of its libretto and music. The narrative and Tubin’s music are synthesised to exemplify how this story of trauma, domination, and resistance culminates in the protagonist’s tragic execution. By investigating the opera’s treatment of power, gender and social hierarchy, this study demonstrates how musical and dramaturgical elements articulate complex social themes. This situates the opera as a mirror of both historic and modern culture, representing the perennial humanistic phenomenon of subjugating authority and its opposition.
