The article presents the use of the prefix sur- as a metaphorical extension of the preposition sur. The study is a part of cognitive linguistics; particularly it is based on our previous research about the locative uses of the preposition sur and their metaphorical extensions. By analysing the semantic content of the prefix sur- in lexemes selected from the French dictionaries, we verified the role of the metaphorization mechanism in the formation of words with the prefix sur-, and found that the use of the unit sur, which is represented either with the preposition or the prefix, consists in the projection of the static locative effect [X on Y] onto three construals: [X on Y], [X greater thanY] and [X exceeds Y].
