Eine neue Quelle zu Gustav Dübens Reisen

Scholars have long speculated about what journeys Gustav Düben (c. 1628–1690) made at the time when he acquired the large quantity of music that is today known as The Düben Collection and that is held at Uppsala University Library. Where did he travel, when did he go, and for how long was he away? Until now, allowance lists for merchandise at Stockholm harbour have been overlooked as a source of information about Düben’s journeys. These lists, however, show that Düben travelled to Lübeck and Amsterdam repeatedly and during a longer period of time than has hitherto been known. This information provides new perspectives on Gustav Düben, on the formation of The Düben Collection, and, more generally, on the dissemination of music in the seventeenth century.
