Vad slags musik spelade nykterhetslogens mässingssextett
Abstract
The brass sextets of the temperance movement. What did they play?
Civilian brass bands were formed in Sweden during the late 1800's in an apparently unceasing rate. New bands were continuously being formed in the industrial communities in Sweden throughout this period and together with the formation of organizations for rifle clubs and the liberal working-men (from the 1860's). the organized temperance movement (from the 1870's) and the Salvation Army (from the 1880's). the brass bands became an important factor in Swedish musical circles. The main intention of this investigation is to establish the different types of repertoire played by the brass bands. This first study deals with music originating from the Swedish branch of the International Order of Good Templars (IOGT). The repertoire was dominated by Swedish and Nordic music. Further, the repertoire can be divided into three main classes: as a first step the pieces of music obtained were associated with the ritual of the various Orders or Associations (temperance songs, chorales, and marches), here called the objective repertoire. The next type of repertoire is called an educational repertoire, which attempted to promote the ideal of adult education at that time. This category also includes the type of popular music that was found primarily in middle class circles (e.g.. patriotic songs, the literary romantic song, ballads and excerpts from popular operas). This repertoire was chosed for the brass bands for didactic reasons and was to be made available to wider sectors of the population. Finally, there was an enterrainmenr repertoire, that consisted mainly of popular dance music; polkas, waltzes, the Rhinelander and mazurkas.
