Abstract
“Musikalisk gestaltning” as a Research Discipline: Defining a Position
The first artistic doctoral programme in music was begun in 1977 at the Department of Musicology at Göteborg University. Public defences of such dissertations, of which the first appeared in 1991, include not only a discussion on the text but also a musical event, normally a concert. In the changes made to the curriculum over the years, a development towards a more traditionally musicological bias can be observed, although the artistic element is still obligatory. Between 2000 and 2006, artistic doctoral programmes in music have been launched at four university-based Schools of Music in Sweden, and a similar programme is in preparation at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. These programmes differ from each other in their attitude towards scholarship and science. While Lund and Stockholm adopt a “dualistic” approach, defining artistic research as a basically non-scientific activity, Göteborg and Luleå take a “non-dualistic” stand, emphasizing the combination of scholarly-scientific and artistic methods and the “dual competence” of the artistic researcher. This ideological difference is reflected in the nomenclature: Göteborg and Luleå use the name musikalisk gestaltning (gestaltning here referring generally to artistic musical activity) for the new discipline, whereas the Lund curriculum in more general terms speaks about “artistic doctoral education” in music. The author finds it reasonable to regard musikalisk gestaltning as a subdiscipline of musicology.
