Cirkulation av populärmusik:
fildelning, msn Messenger och mp3-spelare i ett föränderligt medielandskap
Abstract
The circulation of popular music:
File-sharing, msn Messenger & mp3 players in a changing media landscape
During the past two decades, media technologies for producing and consuming popular music have gone through some major changes. “Older” media technologies such as radio and television as well as “new” media technologies such as the Internet all take part in shaping how popular music is used today. This article discusses how media technologies are interwoven with and contributes to constructing peoples listening to popular music today. The meanings of media and media technologies are investigated through how teenage girls in Sweden use popular music. The article is based on a media ethnographic fieldwork with 24 girls, 14 to 16 years old in a medium sized Swedish town. Discovering, getting and listening are used as three stages to analyse music use. These stages require different media technologies. “New” media create a particular network of circulation for popular music amongst the girls. Filesharing, msn Messenger and mp3 players are very important for how music becomes a part of the girls’ everyday life. Mobility, speed, and change are the main effects of the changed media landscape, the landscape also affects the way people experience music.
