Bourgeois gardens - their use and design
In the 17th to 19th centuries the burghers in Gothenburg had agricultural areas outside the city. Their primary function was food production, but wealthier burghers added ornamental garden as well as summer houses on their lots. This article traces the origin and use of these gardens based on an archaeological excavation on one of them, called Johanneberg.
