Frågan om huruvida Jesus presenteras som en förebild i evangelierna, och i så fall på vilket sätt, står i centrum i föreliggande artikel. Olika forskare har på olika sätt uttryckt tveksamhet kring Jesus som förebild, visat på begräns-ningar och lyft fram lärjungarna som förebilder. Evangeliernas genre förstås idag av en majoritet av forskare som antik biografi. Att antika biografier ofta presenterade goda förebilder gör det sannolikt att Jesus lyfts fram som förebild(en) i evangelierna. En sådan förståelse av genren bekräftas av innehållet i evangeliernas berättelser där Jesus talar om sig själv som förebild på flera olika sätt. Följaktligen finns det ett tydligt imperativ till imitation av Jesus i evangelierna utifrån både genreförväntningarna och förebildsmotivet i berättelserna. Imitationen rör Jesu karaktär, andliga praktiker, lidande, tjänst och ledarskap. Det finns både en uppmaning till imitation för människor i allmänhet och en uppmaning som gäller ledare. Utifrån exempel hos Paulus och Petrus föreslås i den senare delen av artikeln en dubbel imitation, vilket innebär ett imiterande av Jesus samtidigt som ledaren själv fungerar som en förebild i sitt sammanhang.
