This article explores how preaching can reflect the realism and complexity of the Bible by embracing both the unsettling and the magnificent aspects of the texts and of life itself. Drawing on Marilynne Robinson’s Reading Genesis and complemented by insights from homileticians such as Thomas G. Long and Brent A. Strawn, the discussion focuses on three central themes: (1) how the Bible’s engagement with difficult narratives can guide the preacher, (2) the relationship between truth-telling and healing, and (3) the ways in which the Bible highlights human greatness and dignity. The article argues that preaching should avoid simplifying or smoothing over either biblical texts or human experience. Instead, it ought to create space for a linguistic exploration of complex and resistant realities—just as the Bible itself does. The conclusion is that preaching which dares to be honest and to mirror the fragmented character of life strengthens the capacity to foster hope and healing.
